internal affairs / FOR PILOT'S

INTERNAL INFORMATION'S:

last updated January 2007

Goose Bay: (CYYR): As of December 22. 2006, Goose was out of AVGAS (by Woodward, the only supplier on the spot). Check with them before arrival. Should have AVGAS by beginning of January 07.

Hangar costs now $ 125 per night. Extreme high for cold and non-heated spot.

Iqaluit-FROBISHER BAY (CYFB): Hangar costs now $ 75 per hour with minimum lease for 3 hours.

AVGAS available in 200 liter drums only. But very low cost AVGAS. Always worth to refuel there.

Kuujjaq-(CYVP): (last third of 2006)

REMARKS: There is a Transport Canada official on the spot for RAMP CHECKS. That guy enjoys checking on foreign registered aircrafts to check upon live saving equipment. Check equipment list according to Transport Canada's requirements, such as mirror, pocket knife, drinking water, life raft for oceanic flights including life west's with lights, etc.

GENERAL: Along the north Atlantic routing AVGAS is available but check each destination by phone in advance. Be aware of extreme high handling costs for ground de-icing and especially hangar spots if available at all.

TIPS for FERRY PILOTS - COSTS + OTHER FACTORS:

USA

General info's: The USA is still PILOT'S PARADISE. Huge public information's available. Virtually every bit of information is reachable.

WEATHER: http://www.aviationweather.gov (the whole 9-yards)

VOICE: 1-800-WX-BRIEF or 1-800-992-7433

AIRPORT INFO'S: http://www.airnav.com (INCLUDING FUEL PRICINGS + HOTELS)!!!

CANADA

Quebec (CYQB): Pedro T and Shell has joined each other, great handling 24/7 at Pedro T.

Goose Bay (CYYR): Hotel North and Labrador are the only choices most likely. Hotel North is certainly the better choice, but still not very satisfactorily. Price and service doesn't necessarily fit. Hotel Labrador is a messy piece of place and a bulldozer on the spot is over due. Wondering if Canada has no regulation for hotels. Disgusting is just the beginning of the indescribable situation compared with first class price.

SOLUTION: There are alternatives such as BRADLEY'S BED + BREAKFAST, phone (709)896-8006, ask for Linda Green. Pricing CAN-$ 50-60 for 1 night incl. breakfast, great family relation and everything simple and available. (Pilot's right choice) !! ...AND FREE PHONE CALLS TO THE US + CANADA !!!!

ICELAND

Reykjavik - (BIRK): High handling fees at the sole FBO - Hotel Loftleidir located at the north side of the airport has on most occasions no rooms available for short time reservations. Highly expensive custom fees after hours (and most likely a majority of small aircrafts arriving AFTER HOURS in BIRK).

SOLUTION: Park aircraft NOT at FBO and ask GND for alternative parking, refuel and pay directly with refueler SHELL and file flight plan directly with Reykjavik control. Also weather info is independently available from Icelandic meteo center. HOTEL: There are other lower cost hotels near the City, such as GUESTHOUSE SUNNA, phone +354 511 5570. IKR 5'000 for 1-night, clean and incl. breakfast.

UPDATE as of May 2006: Guesthouse SUNNA charges higher over night fees for summer season. Be aware that room with bath is from May 1. until fall around IKR 7,500. Consider taxi cost's from the airport around IKR 1,000 +/- for each way, so that would count a total over IKR 9,000 during the summer months. Our last check with Hotel Loftleidir on the airport edge was the same price for PILOT's per night per room. We therefore consider availability for rooms first with the Hotel during the summer months but out of season SUNNA is the best choice !!

ADDITIONAL: Try to proceed to HOEFN (BIHN) if your aircraft has the additional 145NM duration in the fuel tanks and weather permits. No handling fees, no custom fees, fuel is more expensive than in Reykjavik, but with the load you need you're still will have a tremendous lower bill to pay. There is a Hotel in Hoefn as well, Hotel HOEFN, phone +354 478 1240. Less costly than Reykjavik and good food. Also well worth to depart to Scotland and having lesser NM's southbound.

SCOTLAND + UK

Prestwick- (EGPK): GREER AVIATION is the best choice for fuel stop, weather planning and other Pilot needs. Great family environment, very professional handling and folks they really care for you. FUEL is VAT free when next destination is out of UK. A great AAA+++ FOR greer aviation !!  Phone +44 (0) 131 339 1010 or e-mail ops@greeraviation.com    Easy fly-in and out, huge runway with ILS and great handling.

Stornoway- (EGPO): Ideal fuel stop before heading either north- or south. The most ideal point far north west of Scotland.

Wick- (EGPC): A messy spot, nothing for great appetite. Fuel prices are comparable with Prestwick, but anything else is simply messy. A spot for fast stops with no intention for quality.

However the following airports of entry to the UK, Scotland respectively are the most attractive:

EGPO - STORNOWAY        EGPK - PRESTWICK        EGPF - GLASGOW

EGPC - WICK      EGPE - INVERNESS
