Ferry Flight ICING

"IN-FLIGHT ICY PICTURES"

CESSNA WING

Result: The high wing Cessna models are still very controllable despite IAS goes low, angle of attack increase but flight characteristics overall with respect to other profiles not as critical.

REMARK: The above is with respect to rim ice. NOTE: Non-gear retractable models are more likely to set on ice at the wheel pants and wing struts. That results in additional drag. We noticed extrem loss of airspeed during such icing condition's and if distance and speed becoming critical due to low fuel, you better go rid of the ice before you can think flying over the distance.

CIRRUS WING

Result: The Cirrus airplane acts very responsive to any kind of ice. Dramatic decrease of IAS due to extrem angle of attack in order to maintain level flight. Despite the TKS anti-ice system, a glycol based liquid flowing trough hairthin holes on the titanium panels mounted to the leading edge of a wing foil, the ice is still able to set on especially when the system is turned on during icing condition's and not timely ahead of such situation's.

NOTE: Since the CIRRUS 20 and 22 model has fixed gear systems, the wheel pants as well are setting on extrem amounts of ice. All combined could result in disaster. The Cirrus is without doubt NOT an aircraft made for known ice. TKS will help preventing certain loads of ice, but it certainly will not prevent having a clear airframe and/or wing structure.

REMARK: The CIRRUS airplane is one it's finest ever built in its class and with respect to performance, economy and price, especially the SR22 is outstanding. But serious ice conditions could certainly shorten the day.
